Talking to a Jehovah Witness

Jehovah Witnesses can be great people. However they are very locked into their beliefs through years of training by the Jehovah Witness Watchtower society. When you talk with them it may appear that they believe the same thing you do, but if pressed it will be revealed that they believe that Jesus is the Archangel Michael and not God. They also believe that grace plus works is required for salvation. Jehovah Witnesses are taught to not accept any literature from outsiders. Since they are entrenched in their beliefs you are not going to change them in a few minutes. The best thing you can do is to provide them something to think about. Either one of these approaches will do that. You should also study the solid evidence that reveals that Jesus is God. I have provided some links for you to do this.

1st Approach:

What do you say when someone says, “Jesus is not God,” or “Jesus never claimed to be God”?

Ask them these questions:

1) What would Jesus have needed to do while he was on Earth to convince everyone that he is God? Wait for their answer and then ask:

2) With that information, do you think everyone would believe?

3) Would they have still crucified him after discovering for certain that he was God?

The answer to the last question is “no”.

Point out that Jesus could not have walked around with a “Big G” on his shirt claiming out in the open to be God. If he had, they would have never crucified him. Jesus had to walk a fine line; he did not boldly yell out, “I’m God,” but he did reveal his identity to those who he desired know the truth. His mission was the cross, and if he were not crucified, our sins would not have been paid for.

A) There are plenty of scriptures to verify Jesus is God. This is a foundational teaching that you should be able to defend.

B) Writing Gravity makes me partial to the evidence. We learn a lot from the Early Church fathers, including the fact that they believed and taught Jesus is God. The Early Church fathers close proximity to the actual events makes them a more reliable source than those today who deny Jesus deity. The initial Early Church Fathers were taught directly from the original apostles and passed the same teaching on to students who passed it on. Here is a great list I found about their belief that Jesus is God.

C) Additionally, we have secular writings of the time that are often referenced as historical support for the gospels. These tell us a great deal about Jesus, and the fact that the disciples worshiped him as God. Here is an example of one of those writings and a link to more.

“[Christians] were in the habit of meeting on a certain fixed day before it was light, when they sang in alternate verse of a hymn to Christ as to a god, and bound themselves to a solemn oath, not to do any wicked deeds, and never to deny a truth when they should be called upon to deliver it up.” Pliny the Younger A.D. 112, Epistles, X.96 wrote a letter to Emperor Trajan asking how to punish Christians for their belief.

2nd Approach:

Ask them to clearly tell you the Gospel. Ask them to repeat it a second time, so there is no misunderstanding. Then take them in their Bible to 1 Corinthians 15:1-8.

1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

1 Corinthians 15:3-8 IS THE GOSPEL PAUL PREACHED:

3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

When you discover that the Gospel the Jehovah Witness just told you is different than Paul’s Gospel, point these verses out to them.

Gal 1:6-9 KJV
6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

I used the KJV because Jehovah Witnesses used it for about seventy years until people pointed out areas that conflicted with their theology. They then came out with their own New World Translation (NWT) to better fit their theological claims. However, the above verses in the NWT are still the same.

Here is a great quick point you can illuminate to make Jehovah Witnesses think. They will agree that Jesus is the Son of God. Ask them these two questions.

Is a man’s son less human than his human father? Obvious answer is “no”.

So why would you think that the Son of God would be less God than God the Father?
